Reclaiming Life with Generalized Myasthenia Gravis

Hi all! I am a 53 year old Indian Army veteran. I was diagnosed with seropositive Generalized Myasthenia Gravis (GMG) in Feb 2022. In July of 2023, I had had to take premature retirement from the Indian Army due to debilitating health conditions.

Complications with steroids

I'm a person who responds well to steroids. However, I was developing glaucoma so the steroids were discontinued. I now take Pyrodostigmine and Azathioprine. Post-medication and slow improvement, I also underwent two sessions of Rituximab while continuing with usual medication.

Using meditation to cope with myasthenia gravis

I have been practicing Vipassana Meditation since 2012. I went for my 20 days long course of Vipassana meditation starting on November 11th, 2023. I continued to carry all my prescribed medications during this time. Once the course started, I stopped taking medication on November 13th, 2023. Since I was feeling better, I successfully completed the course on December 2nd, 2023. Since November 13th, 2023, I have not taken any medication. Moreover I have joined a gym and regularly go for my workout. I meditate two times a day - one hour each.

Focusing on improving my health

Whether it was the effect of the last session of Rituximab which was administered in April 2023 or Vipassana Meditation is yet to be ascertained for sure. But I am off medication since November 13th, 2023.

I have also improved my muscle tone and do 10 km of cardio on treadmill, cross trainer and recumbent bike. I do weight training too which I was missing since Feb 2022. In all I am in gym for 2 hours on alternate days.

My eyesight which was deteriorating rapidly has halted and is stable. I have not yet pushed my limit to pre-GMG diagnosis but I am on the way to achieve it. I do still keep all my medication with me at all times - in case it recurs.

I hope this article helps all. Please reach out to me incase you feel I could be of any help.

Wishing all a speedy recovery and stability.

Regards,
