The Challenges of Myasthenia Gravis and Life Beyond
In 2015, my left eye began to droop until it eventually closed. At first, I thought I had a mild stroke, but when I went to my eye clinic, the doctor suggested it might be Myasthenia Gravis (MG). My family doctor referred me to a neurologist, and after some tests, I was diagnosed with MG. I was prescribed prednisone, mestinon, and methotrexate (which I was told was a new medication with promising results). Unfortunately, I haven't had good results, and my symptoms have only worsened over time.
Worsening symptoms and physical challenges
My balance has deteriorated, leading to multiple falls—two of which resulted in serious concussions. My weakness in both my arms and legs has gotten worse, along with my eyesight and increasing fatigue. The latest issue is with my neck: the muscles are so weak that I experience 24-hour pain every day, which extends up the back of my neck. I’m starting to realize just how severe my symptoms have become. I think I only noticed the eye drooping at first, but over the last 6 months, the other symptoms have worsened significantly.
I’ve always been an active person with a lot of energy. I used to be very particular about keeping my home clean, but now, some nights I leave dinner dishes until the next morning—something that would have been unheard of for me before.
Struggling with life daily
I’m wondering if this is a flare-up or if my symptoms are getting worse. I’ve read a little more about MG, but I know I need to learn more. I’m 77 years old and worked full-time until I was 70, when I stopped to care for my granddaughter, who was just a year old at the time. After my daughter moved almost two years ago, I continued helping friends and neighbors with housework and packing for moves, but now, I can barely take care of myself, and the memory fog is overwhelming.
Life has become a challenge, but I’m grateful because I know others have it worse. I’m hoping this is just a flare-up and that my energy and strength will return. I used to walk 3-4 miles a day with no issues, plus I worked out 4 days a week. Now, I can barely walk a couple of blocks before I’m done.
Flare-up or progressive symptoms?
Is this a flare-up? Is there light at the end of the tunnel? From 2015 until about 7 months ago, I had only mild weakness, fatigue, and generalized pain, but now, the symptoms have intensified.
Any suggestions, insights, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
