Pyridostigmine availability

I take 180 mg of pyridostigmine ER twice daily, but lately I've had trouble finding a pharmacy that has it. They all tell me that they can't get it from the manufacturer. So I have two questions. First, is this a local problem or is everyone having it? Second, is the problem only for the extended release form, or is it a problem for both forms?

  1. Even OptumRx, a nation-wide mail-order pharmacy, can't get it. My neurologist has me on two 60 mg tablets of the faster release form three times a day. I still get the same total dosage, but it's not as smoothly spread out. I'm doing OK with it, but I prefer the ER version.

    1. I did. Until the RR form is available we're making do with two 60 mg tablets of the rapid release form three times a day. That gives me the same daily dosage spread out over the day. It works but not as well as the extended release.

    2. Glad to hear it is keeping you stable!

  2. Turns out OptumRx is out of stock after all. I just got that notification. So now I'm making do with some 60 mg fast release that I happened to have. But I'll run out of that this weekend. At that point I don't know what I'll do.

Since OptumRx serves the whole country, this must be a widespread problem. And given Jazmin's comment, it is not an isolated problem. Why does the manufacturer allow this to happen? And does anyone know when the supply will be renewed?

    1. I wanted to check in to see how you’re doing. Have you been able to get your medications? Thinking of you, Julie (team member)

  3. Yes that happened to me as well back in October after I left the hospital. I was prescribed Mestinon 180mg and the pharmacy had a hard time getting it as well. I took an extra few days for it to get to me. I live in Oklahoma. - Jazmin (MG member)

    1. I live in Santa Barbara, and t appears that no local pharmacy has any. Thinking that a mail-order pharmacy is likely to have a larger stash than a local one. I switched over to OptumRX. And indeed that seems to have worked. They said they could get some to me sometime this week. In the meantime I''m making do with some older 60mg rapid release that I happened to still have. It's a very distant second best,. but I can out up with it for a few days.

      1. Thanks so much for sharing the solution you found! Best wishes
