19-Years-Old, With a Body I Couldn't Control.
I was weak everywhere from the get-go. In March of 2005, I noticed I couldn't button my jeans or raise my arms to fix my ponytail. Then I started choking on everything liquid and solid and I went from 160 lbs. 5 ft. 7 in. tall to about 88 lbs when I was finally diagnosed.
No one believed me
I couldn't talk without talking through my nose. I fell constantly, I couldn't dress myself, and I peed myself sometimes too. My parents thought it was drugs and forced me to go to the doctor. I was told I was weak from anxiety?! Seriously?! I was dying and soon if I didn't find out what was wrong.
Finally, my mom caught the Law and Order episode with the MG woman. I had all her symptoms and my mom, a nurse, went to the doctor she works for and asked him to test me.
Finally, a diagnosis
My results were off the charts. Had a thymectomy in January 2006 and was put on meds. I finally was able to eat and talk again. But I have had multiple crises over the years.
I was in a wheelchair about 6 months before I got my strength back. That was 2009. But now I have had 2 beautiful children and have been in remission for years now. I don't even take Mestinon now. But I threw on Percocet and Fentanyl patches to shut me up and I have battled a bad addiction ever since.
History of autoimmune...
Also, they say MG is not hereditary but my great grandfather had late-onset generalized MG and my aunt Mechelle died at 42-years-old after a long hard battle with multiple sclerosis in 2009.
My great-grandmother on my dad's side died a painful death from rheumatoid arthritis in her 30s. So I would say my family is predisposed to autoimmune diseases.
I will be 36 in May and I'm lucky to be in such a healthy state. Thanks for reading!!
