My MG Story

I was 50-years-old and I started falling. My legs gave out, which went on for six months until I fell going up the stairs and broke my first bone in life.

Trying to make the connection

I kept trying to tell the hospital workers my story and they even put electrodes on my legs and said all was fine. I suggested I walk till I drop then take readings. I then went back to my GP for a cast check and was told I fell because my little legs couldn't hold my weight up.

My weight loss journey

Yes, I was 260 pounds but they have worked for many years at that weight. I said okay and that was rock bottom I persuaded weight loss surgery. I was still falling when I had surgery and had lost weight.

At four months out, I had lost 68 lbs and I asked my surgeon why I was still falling if weight was the cause. He sent me to a neurologist and she did the blood work, asked lots of questions, and watched me walk.

Finally, a diagnosis

Only three days later was told she thought at first MS but actually it's myasthenia gravis - but a rarer than rare case since I only have it in my legs. I was put on meds, and 19 years later at 71-years-old, I am doing just perfect. I see my neurologist once a year and it has never progressed. The thing is I do have an older cousin who has MS since he was about 30-years-old and is in a wheelchair.
