Advice about antibiotics

I was diagnosed with MG in Feb '22, as a result of double vision and droopy eyelids. Luckily only misdiagnosed briefly as 3rd cranial nerve palsy before getting corrected diagnosis. I believe the in correct 1st diagnosis caused a sense of urgency that lead to the quick correct diagnosis.

I am now faced with a new issue, MRSA ear infection with a perforated ear drum. I completed one course of antibiotics (Cipro drops and amoxicillin pills) before having a culture that found the MRSA. Now I have been prescribed Doxycycline pills and tobra/dex drops. Doxycycline and tobramycin are both on a list I found online of meds to avoid with MG. Another med Linezolid is not on the list and shows to be effective against the bacteria causing my infection. I am having a lot of issues reaching my ENT and my Neurologist to get them to advise me on these meds. So far I do not think they have consulted on the issue.

Any advice, thoughts on next steps would be helpful.

Generally, am I wise to question antibiotics prescribed or is it more of a take them and monitor my MG symptoms kind of thing? The first course of antibiotics had little effect on my symptoms, but the warnings I see on the new ones are a little more concerning. Thoughts?

  1. I ended up taking the new antibiotics and they appeared to have cleared up the infection but not without increased double vision. I have increased my mestinon from 15mg 2x day to 60mg 4x day with little effect. Other triggers of my flare may be continued infection, multiple vaccinations (pneumonia, flu, shingles and 2nd covid booster). I had 1st booster 3wks before first double vision symptoms started and uncontrollable double vision started three days after 2nd booster. As I stated though I have experienced many things that could be triggers. I am working through various tests and treatments in the hope of getting the double vision back under control. It has generally been totally out of control since November and was poorly controlled from July through September. Prior to that from February to July it was well controlled with low doses of mestinon.

    1. I know it has been some time since you posted your initial question. What did you decide and how did it go? -Mallory (Team Member)
