Diet

Hi everyone, I wanted to check in with folks after reading some recent research on the positive impact of both a vegan and Keto diets on our immune systems. Has anyone followed either diet and if so have you noticed improvement in MG symptoms?
Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Paul

  1. Really helpful. Thank you!

    1. Hi there! I started a pescatarian diet a month before my MG diagnosis. I was a vegetarian for a while, and now I am vegan. I’ve found a vegan diet can help manage MG symptoms and feel less body fatigue but can also have some negatives, which may, in some situations, can mimic MG symptoms, not necessarily worsen them directly, if the proper amount of nutrients is not consumed. One of the key aspects is that a vegan diet is packed with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory foods, and food that positively helps gut health. Here is an article about the vitamins and minerals I prioritize and how they can benefit those of us with MG: https://myasthenia-gravis.com/living/prioritizing-vitamins-minerals. I also have reduced my fast food intake due to the limited availability of vegan options, significantly reducing my intake of trans fats, saturated fats, and processed ingredients, which I believe positively benefits my overall health and energy levels.

I think removing dairy has been one of the most significant components in feeling my body functioning correctly and in a harmonious cycle.

The main negative with vegan food is that it takes much more food to reach recommended calories and specific vitamins and minerals such as calcium and potassium. There are vegan options for all the vitamins and minerals we need. However, it can be challenging to eat enough if you have a small appetite, which is a side effect of some MG medications. Low calcium levels can lead to various health issues that mimic MG-related symptoms, including muscle contractions and cramps. Low potassium levels can lead to cramps, particularly in the legs, and fatigue. Also a note, be careful jumping into a vegan diet too fast, as it can cause a couple days of stomach bloating if you do.
