Has anyone had this problem?

Hi, my name is Suzie, I have been diagnosed with MuSk myasthenia gravis 3 months ago. Last Thursday I went to the hospital because I could not breathe properly or swallow, I was scared and that made things worse as I thought it was a crisis, but it wasn't.

It feels like I need to belch I can't talk, swallow or get air in through my mouth. The feeling starts after having my prednisolone and pyridostigmine tablets in the morning, my doctor has put me on pantoprazole 40mg to help alleviate the problem.

Has anyone else suffered from this? Would like to know.

  1. Hi Suzie! I was diagnosed in 2018 but have had gMG symptoms for about 25 years. The phantom bolus symptom you're describing is often associated with GERD as well so there may be information more likely to be found online if you search it in association with that. I get it often. Sometimes eating or drinking something helps. I'm not sure if it's actually that the muscles in my throat just can't contract back to normal that causes that feeling, because it will seem actually clear of obstruction.
My default for a bit of instant relief is vagus toning breathing, as well. That's great to practice and can be really helpful to be for immediate relief of many of my symptoms and to calm down as well.

    1. thanks for your input I have found that if I say calm my breathing starts to improve but it is when I can swallow I know its passing. Thanks for the information.

  2. I have phantom bolus symptoms often, even when I'm not having many other bulbar type symptoms. It is actually commonly associated with GERD too, so you may find more information searching in that vein. Maybe a GERD chat somewhere?

    1. I've been diagnosed with MG for 11yrs now. When I take my Mestinon (pyridostigmine) I tend to have a hard time swallowing but that is due to the excess saliva that medication tends to produce. Not only is it a lot of saliva its thicker and stickier which makes swallowing difficult and sometimes it feels like an air bubble is stuck in my throat. I hope your symptoms get better soon. - Jazmin (team member)
