Hereditary MG

My mother in law told me her mother had MG and she died in late 50s due to complications from the disease. My mother in law was told that the disease is hereditary and she would not get it and my husband and his sister would not get it. My girls would be the ones that MG would effect if it was carried.

Does anyone know if there has been any updates to this? My daughters have been told to make certain they inform their doctors of this issue. They have done this, while my oldest daughter experiences fatigue and other possible symptoms.

Thank you,

  1. Thank you so much for this information. I am passing on all this information.

    1. CommunityMember9de9c1.... There are 3 forms of what is called "MG".

This one for this web site is autoimmune disorder. Just know as Myasthenia Gravis (MG)

There is another autoimmune "MG" that is called Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS). They have a different Facebook page.

The Other "MG" is Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome (CMS).

Although All have pretty much the same symptoms the way it for lack of better terms "starts & progresses" is different, as can be/are the treatments.

All 3, Myasthenia Gravis, Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) & Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome. Are all "MG"!

Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome is Genetic. But Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome (Genetic form) just like Myasthenia Gravis(MG) Or Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) (Autoimmune form) can show up at any age.

While Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome (Genetic form) usually diagnosed in infancy or childhood, but not always. Sometimes symptoms don't show up until sometime an adult hood, including old age.

If concerned, Your husband and his sister & all kids for that line as with your mother in-law. Could have a "Genetic testing done, even before symptoms start to see if they have any of the genetic marker for Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome (CMS)... There are a few. I could be wrong, but I don't believe it is true that I will "skip a generation." I am not a Dr. I just know that while I was on the Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome Facebook page while I was getting diagnosed. Mine did turn out to be the Autoimmune Myasthenia Gravis. Not the Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome.
But many persons on that page, not only they had it but some their kids also, and not every child they had.

Hope this helps get some more information. To help keep an eye on things.

By the way my Granddaughter is type 1 Diabetic. It also is Genetic. My sister Grandson has it. But none of their siblings have it per the genetic testing. We have no Idea where it came from. Possibly my grandmother she passed away when her kids were young and no one Know's for sure what type of diabetic, she was. Her kids all knew she was diabetic... My best guess was Type 1... If so, it skipped 2 generations, before showing up.

So, I get your concern about your kids!!

      Hope this helps!!

      1. Hi Lynna, we are so glad you found our MG community. I wanted to share an article you might find helpful on this topic: https://myasthenia-gravis.com/clinical/genetics Researchers have linked MG to a family of genes called human leukocyte antigens (HLA). Best wishes are you help your daughters navigate this, if your oldest continues to exhibit more symptoms we would suggest looking into an MG specialist. You can find a list of MG Partners in Care through the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America: https://myasthenia.org/Partners-in-MG-Care Kindly, Kaitlyn (Team Member)
