Mestinon Reverse Effect

Hello all,
I have been taking mestinon for 8 years and was very dependent on it. Just recently I have been having reverse effects from it. It actually causes MG symptoms. Is this normal? What does this mean?

  1. the last couple of weeks I had started getting really dizzy, fatigue, weak, slurred speech, and trouble swallowing after I take the mestinon, which I take 60 MG every 4 hours. Once I realized it was the mestinon I stopped as of this week and only take prednisone and methylphenidate, I have not had those horrible symptoms since. The symptoms are there but very slim as long as i rest. I am starting on gammurex in the morning, hopefully it helps. Thanks for your response.

    1. HI. I am doing better, not taking mestinon anymore. I am now doing gammurex infusions bi weekly, and 10 MG prednisone. I don't know what happened but my body no longer tolerated mestinon. I was only taking 60 MG every 4 hours for over 8 years, never had a problem until recently. I tried taking half of it and still had those effects so I just stopped altogether with my neurologists approval of course. Try talking with your doctor and see what other options you have. Best of luck to you! Xoxo

    2. Hello, my apologies I didn't see your message until today. Gammurex is going well so far. Thanks for checking in! Xoxo

  2. When you say it causes MG symptoms, which symptoms? Are they happening immediately after taking the mestinon, or how long after? Some side effects of mestinon can also mimic MG symptoms.

The kidneys are responsible for clearing pyridostigmine (Mestinon) out of the body, so I would have them checked for proper functioning.

Are you on any other MG treatments, such as immunotherapy? Typically this is the next treatment step when mestinon stops doing the job. Or to increase the mestinon dose. I am unfamiliar with mestinon stop having an effect, but it could be the progression of your MG.
