Problems

I am nearly eighty and have a secondary illness I have to take medication for this 2nd illness which causes constipation etc. Since i cannot do much physical exercise, I get in a state with this problem.. I try to eat all foods, espercially vegtables and walk around with my three wheeler. I get very depressed with the situation.

  1. Dulcolax, 3 pills at bedtime works well. Stewed prunes are the best natural way.

    1. Hello,
I can sympathise with you, as I too had terrible constipation at the beginning of my journey with MG.
I found that an over the counter gentle enema that you can insert for yourself, (I assume you can purchase these in the USA as I live in the UK.)helped to initially get things going, and then, start to have prunes/bananas every morning with breakfast. This has worked very successfully for me and now I’m blissfully regular.
Mind you Pyriddostigmine ( Mestonin) can make things a little like an express train but rather that than awful constipation.
You may have already found a resolution to your problem as I note your request was posted last year, either way hoping you or someone else may find this useful.

      1. Thanks so much for sharing those valuable tips! I noticed a need for discussion of solutions for constipation on our site despite how common of an experience I know this is for those with MG, whether MG/MG treatment-related or due to another condition or cause. I started this discussion to help others feel less alone: https://myasthenia-gravis.com/forums/struggling-with-constipation. I know so many would benefit from your tips and openness to share, so if you have the time, I would love it if you could copy and paste what you shared above or anything similar to the topic. It will be of immense value to the community. Hopefully, others will feel open to sharing their struggles and also other solutions or advice others have.

    2. Hello I hope you are doing well despite the symptoms you are experiencing. I'm sorry to hear you have to live with 2 illnesses. I'm extending an ear to listen and be with you through the screen. Have you asked your doctor if prescribing a stool softener would be beneficial to you? Best wishes. - Jazmin (team member)
