Question

I was diagnosed with General MG approximately 10 years ago. After working with a prestigious doctor from Johns Hopkins Hospital, with medication (Mycophenolate (Cellcept), Pyridostigmine Br (Mestinon) and low levels of Prednisone (steroid) I was able to move into remission. I remained in remission for approximately eight years. Over the past year and a half (beginning age 70) I have been dealing with a weak lower lumbar (lower potion of my back). It feels like a 2 to 3 pound weight is attached to my lower back and I have to difficulty holding my back (shoulders to waist) totally erect. This is difficult when holding two plates of food or walking even short distances. 2 Neurologists have only recommended physical therapy to strengthen my core. I did that for a year and insurance has graduated me out of continuing PT. I’ve just joined a yoga class and began playing pickle ball. However, this weak lower back feeling is disheartening and depressing!! I have had to modify my activities because of that heavy feeling in my lower back and I’m beginning to feel anxious about walking further than less than 1/8 of a mile.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

  1. I have exactly the same problem. MG muscle weakness attacks everywhere, but it seems to me to be most troublesome in places that were already failing and arthritic. For me, it's my lower back and knee. Also did PT to strengthen core but not really successfully. I use a rollator to maintain a healthy level of upright walking. And a knee brace to help my muscles hold my knee steady. The more active I am one day, the better I feel the next.
