Statins and Beta Blockers

I have read in various articles that taking Statins or Beta Blockers facilitates OMG. Discussed with Cardiologist and he became defensive that it was proven fact through research that they are harmful?

A search of the site came up with one post, but wasn’t definitive. Is there anyone on the board with OMG/MG that has addressed the use of Statins and/or Beta Blockers and reached a decision to continue or discontinue taking them. Thanks.

Helen

  1. I've been taking Propranolol since 1994. Following this thread.

    1. My Neurologist took me off of my beta blocker, the warnings were clearly written in the precautions for my drug specifically so I have been switch. I certainly didn’t want to continue taking something that was making things harder for me.

      1. I was only recently diagnosed with MG so the only thing I know about statins is that they can have the side effect of causing muscle pain. I was actually diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and several years after that and dealing with a lot of FM pain, I stopped taking the statin and what a surprise. I have not had the FM pain since then.

        1. 😮

      2. I just started Atorvastatin and aspirin for high cholesterol and diagnosed CAD. I don’t feel any difference in MG symptoms. I discussed with my neuro and vascular doc and we all agreed that since I had a recent TIA the risk of a stroke or heart attack vs an MG flare that can be treated makes it an easier decision for me. Every person is different and has their own risks

        1. Hello! It's been some time since we last connected. I would love to know how your MG symptoms have been recently.

        2. My MG symptoms are a little worse overall and we increased my Mestinon dosage. My carotid artery disease is back down to low risk below 50% from the statin, plant based diet and light exercise. I can’t say that the statin increased my MG symptoms, as they’ve been steadily worsening as I age and I’m 66 now. I’ve had MG since early childhood. I can’t say the statin lowered my CAD risk by itself. I don’t think anything works in a vacuum. I’m just very happy my stroke risk is back down again as that’s my greatest challenge now (other than a MG breathing crisis lol. Not funny really but I could step outside and get hit by a bus or a piece of space junk so I think it’s all about managing risk 😀)
