Is a wheelchair in my future?

I am 75 with a moderately controlled case of gMG. I can still walk around the house. I can go outside and go to small stores on a rolling walker. I can get around the grocery store pushing and leaning on a cart. I am curious to know how many of you are using a wheelchair on a daily basis, at what age you began and whether you think your infirmity is mostly GM related or a combination of GM and age. Thanks. I'm going to have to modify my house to use a wheelchair.

  1. i'm not yet 60 and am fine walking around the house, i can carry laundry up stairs, and get super winded, but with minor rest and fine. We are, however, going on vacation this summer to Montreal and I'm renting a scooter for the week. We plan to go to the botanical gardens, miles and miles of walking. Just no way i'm walking 10 miles, maybe 1/2 mile but the gardens are an all day walking event, just not an option with MG, I would be so tired constantly, it wouldn't be fun. Plus i can carry the water and back pack all day with the scooter. Should be fun.

    1. I am 73, and the meds must be controlling my MG as I have been improving, had to to to physical therepy till they said I could have no more, my balance was greatly improved and can walk without falling down, put the cane away. My left eye is still out of line, at least my right one is still straight.

      1. That's wonderful, Handy. You are doing great. Now to get those eyes fixed. My experience is that when your medicine regimen is working, it works on everything. The eyes are often the last to come around but you're on a good path.

    2. I use a wheelchair for about 95% of my mobility. In part it’s due to other underlying conditions and to be clear I was using one prior to MG. However, prior to MG I was also able to walk around short distances in my house, either by leaning on the wall, using the cane or a walker. Now I am almost always using my wheelchair, but cannot complain as I’m able to do and teach yoga from my chair. Recovery from activity can be challenging though. I also use assistive devices for writing and for my crafts, especially for painting.
