Might it be MG?

Right, for the last 18 months I have experienced double vision (vertical) accompanied by a tightness over my head from temple to temple whenever I bend down and do something for a period of time, for example weeding a flower bed. It is also accompanied by vertigo which when at its worst I have to sit down and rest. The symptoms usually subside after half an hour or so. I also experience the double vision at times of stress. It is worse when I look left than when I look right. I also have ptosis of my left eyelid and I suspect abnormal drooping of both which for example makes it impossible for me to drive at night as the eyelashes cause huge diffraction sunbursts. I also experience severe tingling in my hands and feet on waking which goes off as I start to move around.
Needless to say I have explained all of these symptoms to my GP and received the usual blank stare of disinterest. However, I googled "double vision when bending down" and MG came up for the double vision part of the search and it caught my eye (no pun intended) and as I read on the more and more the symptoms at least in part seemed to fit with mine.
I know you cant give medical opinions but do any of you suffer with similar symptoms to mine, because if so I shall attempt to talk to my GP again over the phone, as that is all they will bring themselves to do these days!!
Hope you can help

  1. Please do! We are really a small community. And as you have already seen, sharing insights (even though we are not doctors) helps us know what to mention or log.

    1. Medesis.... I am sorry you are going through this!! This is my experience with all of those symptoms. I do have MG, But I also have a Chiari Malformation (brain hernia into spinal column) which can cause many/most of the same symptoms as MG.

Sometimes it is very hard for me to tell what is the MG and what is the Chiari's !! But I have had them both now long enough to start sorting many of them out. But for me the Chiari's gives me head aches some times like you are describing & the vertigo. Also double vision when I look right or left. It can also cause the experience severe tingling in the hands and feet.

I also have High blood pressure & type 2 diabetes both of these can also cause those same symptoms. As well as just plain hypothyroidism which I also have. My daughter has Hashimoto thyroid disease and has the same symptoms. Some others medical conditions also cause all of these symptoms.

Juliana, is correct keep a log/journal of your symptoms. including time, what you were doing, etc. Even if no symptoms that day write it down.

Hoping you can get some answers soon!! Best Wishes!! Sally Farrier... (Myasthenia-Gravis.com team member).

      1. Not a medical opinion, but perhaps a path. First, begin a log. When a person finally gets into a medical appointment, the time is short. If you can show a pattern of symptoms it helps. Most GPs will have very little experience diagnosing even the most classic form of MG. The double vision that is typically reported in MG sometimes goes away when one eye is closed, so watch for that. While vertigo isn't usually high on the list, drops in blood pressure and sudden periods of weakness are reported by many. The important thing is to be organized and seek help early. While the members of this community cannot help with diagnosis, they can help you know what to put in your log and encourage you to be persistent. Juliana (team member.)
