Ocular MG

I was diagnosed by a neuro opthamologist but my blood tests were negative. Even though I have ptosis, the consulting neurologist said that he did not believe I have this condition because I can tightly close my eyes.

Is this belief accurate?

  1. That is very strange for the doctor to rule out MG just because you closed your eyes tightly during that particular appointment. Very much like said, I too am able to close my eyes tightly but if my doctor tries to open my eyes then I have weakness and can't keep them open. It sucks when you have a doctors appointment on a "good" day. Doctors may doubt your symptoms or diagnosis because they physically can't see a problem. You can also ask for another problem and or a second opinion. I hope you get a proper diagnosis soon. - Jazmin (team member)

      1. You raise a very good question!! While we are not Dr.s and can't give medical advice. But we can talk from personal experience. I am Seronegative meaning my blood test were negative. I was sent to a neuro ophthalmologist because of ptosis, and other vison issues. Mestinon helps my ptosis. I can appear to close my eyes tightly. But if the attending Dr. tries to open them, I have no resistance and can't keep them shut. And neuro Ophthalmologist just studies the eyes and neuro pathways. A Neurologist studies the full bodies neuropathways. Again, not a Dr and not trying to give medical advice but I have been there with conflicting Dr.s.... But to me It sounds like your neuro ophthalmologist needs to have a talk with your consulting neurologist !! Hug to you!! Sally Farrier... Myasthenia-Gravis.com (team member).

        1. The neurologist did request a chest CAT scan re thymus and a nerve conduction test. It is very difficult to get an appointment for the latter in the Miami area. I will have the thymus test tomorrow. Maybe there will be more info to help with a diagnosis. Thank you, Cheryl and Jess.

Is there a support group for ocular MG patients?
