Losing My Voice

I'm Seronegative and have been losing my voice on and off for the past couple of months with no changes in medication or other factors such as a secondary illness that would account for it. I came across this site, https://voicefoundation.org/health-science/voice-disorders/voice-disorders/voice-dysfunction-in-neurological-disorders/myasthenia-gravis-mg/ which seems to indicate that most of the cases of laryngitis, hoarseness, vocal fatigue they've seen in MG patients were Seronegative. I haven't found much discussion of the issue in MG related forums, so I'm unsure how common it is. I'm hoping to find information that may aid in restoring my voice and help others that are seeking the same answers.

  1. My solidarity to you. I’m a professor and my graduate seminars are at night. Lectures during the day. By evening my voice is faint, breathing is a labor, and other symptoms such as leg/neck weakness mean it’s tough.

    1. Welcome to the group! We're really glad to have you here. You have quite a busy schedule juggling your teaching commitments! How do you handle everything? Balancing teaching and personal care can be challenging. We'd love to hear your approach!

  2. Hi Jodi, My neuro says that speech therapy would likely have the same outcome as physical therapy in that it will only stress the muscles faster than normal. Losing my voice has caused me to miss many social events with my friends and neighbors as it's difficult to speak over loud music or crowd noise, so I've just been avoiding those situations. Holiday events were difficult to pass up but necessary.

    1. Hi! It sounds really tough dealing with that situation. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to miss out on social events because of your voice. It’s understandable to prioritize your well-being, especially during the holidays. Many people face similar challenges, and feeling frustrated about it is okay. I wish you a happy new year filled with joy, peace, and good health.

  3. Hi there! I just wanted to check in and see how you've been doing over the past year. Have you come across any helpful resources or treatments since we last spoke? It would be great to hear from you and see how things are going! I started another discussion on this topic to see if it reaches some new people: https://myasthenia-gravis.com/forums/have-you-experienced-losing-your-voice.
