Myasthenia Gravis for 15 years and has Fallen; now has Brain Bleeds.

Hello, I'm new here and I'm researching for my Father in law who has had MG for over 15 years. About a month ago he passed out walking up the stoop and landed on the back of his head. He was rushed to Emergency and in a Coma for a couple of weeks. His MG flared up really bad and he was on breathing tubes for a couple of weeks. He has multiple brain bleeds= brain trauma from falling and hitting the back of his head on the stoop steps.

Has anyone ever dealt with this combination of complications?

He is now in a Rehab here in NY. He is awake, eating little and talking a little. We are constantly trying to explain to the facility staff why he's so tired all the time and he is weak; it's because of his MG.
His insurance has already threatened to take him off because he is not moving fast enough in him getting better. Which is a terrible thing to say to someone who is going thru so much as it is. ( I really don't care for the Insurance companies) His muscles are just so week after this Fall and him being bed ridden for a month.

Please if anyone has any knowledge about anything to do with Brain Trauma to a person with long years of MG. That would be a blessing.

  1. Hey! We are so thrilled you found this community. It is fantastic that you are dedicated to helping your FIL and becoming more understanding of their experience with MG. I am so deeply sorry to hear about their recent injury and resulting effects. I can't begin to imagine the emotional toll that is taking on your family. I send my wholehearted compassion and good thoughts for healing <3 I am so glad to hear they are awake and eating and talking.

I recommend keeping this document about cautionary drugs with MG on hand and sharing it with hospital staff. It is not a complete list, as everyone with MG is unpredictable in how they react. Still, it is a good compilation nonetheless: https://nebula.wsimg.com/903ebe2c701eb4e72e3211dc9fb9064e?AccessKeyId=7F50FBE19A111D19DDAC&disposition=0&alloworigin=1.

I do not see any discussion of brain bleeds or brain trauma on our site. I recommend the following scientific literature on the subject: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8023623/#:~:text=Myasthenia%20gravis%20can%20develop%20after,indirectly%20from%20a%20predisposed%20state.. Your main concern would probably be the worsening of MG symptoms, so keep that in mind as should the staff. IVIG, PLEX, Mestinon increase, and prednisone would likely be steps the hospital could take if your FIL's MG does worsen: https://myasthenia-gravis.com/treatment. Another concern that would be critical would be any drugs used to control blood pressure, seizures, or headaches. I recommend checking if any suggestions of drugs are on the document I linked above and always double check with your own research and discuss any change to your FIL's treatment for the brain trauma with their MG doctor.

Are there any planned surgeries in the future?
