Myasthenia Gravis post COVID Vaccination

Hello All,

I want to share my story and wants to check if you have similar experience. And, wants to understand what's coming-up in the future.

I have taken first COVID dose in May 2021, post few days vaccination I was finding difficulty in spitting water out of my mouth but this was for few mins after toothbrush. And, it went away in 2-3 days. After gap of 4 months I took Does 2, and after Does 2 I was feeling difficultly in chewing along with issue of spitting water during toothbrush. But, these symptoms also went away in 2-3 days. After 9 months of Does 2, I took Booster shot in May 2022 and then went for the mountain trekking for 8 days. Through-out my trekking I faced issue with chewing food, and I thought it will go away like Does 2. But, it didnt. So, I discussed with ENT and Neurologist and they diagnosed with MG with Acetyle Choline Receptor Antibody value of 5.69. Right now taking medication 60 mgs three times a day and I'm fine. But, just worried will it stay forever or it will go away?

Does anyone got MG after COVID vaccination and did it remissioned ?

  1. I have had ocular MG since 2015 with reasonably mild and largely symptoms and was drug free (Mestinon)when symptoms returned in 2021.
It took me a while to recognise that the symptoms returned within weeks of my second Astra Zeneca Covid shot.
A never previously-experienced major dermititis outbreak occurred almost simultaneously.
I am not an anti-vaccer and my Dermatologist reinforced the importance of Covid vaccinations so I completed my two booster shots with Pfizer Cominarty.
My ocular MG diplopia symptoms have almost disappeared but I am not keen on a further booster.
I am 77 years of age and in otherwise pretty good health and live an active life.
    Do others have similar experiences?

    1. Peter, appreciate your thoughts. Many of us pro-vaccination are faced with a dilemma regarding vaccines that are commonly reported to flare MG symptoms or have triggered the start of MG symptoms for several. I am not surprised that anyone would be hesitant to get further boosters. But again, back to that, we pro-vaccers usually support that all vaccines have risks but contribute to overall public health. Hard decisions

  2. I'm getting few notification about reply to this post so I came to this post to read it.
So, let me provide my updates. I'm right now off to medication since last 7 months now. Yes, not taken even single tablet.
I'm not sure what changes caused remission of MG but I can briefly tell what I'm practicing every day after MG happened. Not sure this has actually helped me.

I followed few Ayurveda routine (Ancient Indian way of living, medicine ). Every morning I drink two glass of water empty stomach, and I do not eat or drink for next 30 mins. Before 40 mins of any food (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) I drink one glass of water. And, I do not drink water during eating and after 40 mins of food. This has helped to keep my digestion system clean and all impurity cleaned from my body. I also started doing few Pranayams (Meditation). I'm performing Anulom vilom and Kapalbhati (These are good breathing techniques). In Ayurveda it is mention that many diseases goes away by performing Pranayams. I have also learned which food to eat when etc. Also, my blood cholesterol become very normal now.

Hope this helps you. Take care All!

    1. Thanks so much for the update. With AChR showing up in your blood when you had it tested, that confirms you have MG, which technically is chronic but can go into remission. Because you have multiple flares, I would try to avoid further flares in the future.
      Illness or infection
      Pregnancy or childbirth
      Extreme temperatures
Stress, especially from surgery or trauma
      Lack of sleep
Magnesium (especially if given by IV)
      Some antibiotics
Certain high blood pressure and heart drugs
Some anesthesia and paralytics (neuromuscular blocking agents)
      Botox (botulinum toxin)
The above can all trigger a flare of MG symptoms or a crisis, https://myasthenia-gravis.com/crisis. One of the most common triggers for MG in remission or dormant is contradicted drugs with MG. This doc is excellent and codes each drug or medication by the level of risk posed to someone with MG. Of course, reactions can differ by individual, http://nebula.wsimg.com/903ebe2c701eb4e72e3211dc9fb9064e?AccessKeyId=7F50FBE19A111D19DDAC&disposition=0&alloworigin=1

  3. I've had 4 Pfizer and 2 bivalent Moderna. Only the 2nd bivalent Moderna bothered me. My muscles were sore one day and then I was chilled for a half day. No big deal.

    1. I have had all the COVID vaccines, but after the most recent one last October, it triggered what appears to be turning out to be MG. I've been in the "no diagnosis" heck for 6 months, but a trial on Mestinon has been amazing and life changing. I do think that the last booster triggered MG, but I also think I've had the MG simmering in the background for years. Every once in a while, I would have periods of extreme weakness and fatigue, was thought to have MS, then that was retracted and every doctor threw up their hands. I'm hoping that we are closing in on a real diagnosis now and that I can stay on the Mestinon. Looking back, I now remember having several weeks of fatigue and weakness after each COVID shot, but it never got bad enough to go to the doctor until the most recent one.

      1. With mestinon working, it sounds like you finally found your answers. Hopefully, you will find some relief by getting this diagnosis confirmed soon. If not for the vaccine, something down the road could have flared your MG similarily

      2. Thank you. I agree - I think it's pretty clear now that this is MG, although my neuro is still hesitant to diagnose it formally. And I also agree - something would have kicked it off. In fact, I think it has been simmering for years, because I've had periodic times when symptoms that are now all too familiar have appeared and then resolved either on their own or with some prednisone.
