Surgery caused an MG crisis and Death (Throat stopped working)

My mom (74 yrs. old) recently passed away after being approved for a surgery to fix her broken arm. The anesthesia and surgery created enough stress that triggered a crisis so that her throat did not work and she could not take her medicine or eat food. The hospital did not act urgently or understand how to treat a patient with MG. This situation is tragic and I want to inform other elderly people with MG to avoid getting a surgery unless it is life-saving. I wish her doctor had done a more thorough pre-op evaluation.

  1. I will be 84 next month. 6 years ago I was to have surgery on my back. I had 4 herniated disks.
Before I had my surgery I talked with my MG Dr. and he told me that I might be on a ventilator until I die if I was out for more than 20 minutes. I asked him to talk to my surgeon and let everyone know. The surgery was done but didn't have good results because of the time limit.
I only had time to get one disk repaired so now I still have 3 bad disks now.
If my Dr. would not told me I might be on a ventilator or dead by now. I can not get the other ones done so I will be in pain for thr rest of my life.

    1. .... I am so sorry!! That pre-op evaluation is very, very important.
Along with Anesthesiologist/ All medical persons that really understand MG and how it can affect us.
Having any procedure done that requires anesthesia no matter what the age of the person with mg.

I can't imagine what your family is going through at this time!! Hugs & love to you all!!
