Using foods that contain magnesium (e.g. basil)

Many myasthenia gravis websites tell us to avoid consuming magnesium because it can weaken muscles and potentially lead to a myasthenic crisis.

However, I wondered whether that applied to foods like basil containing a tiny amount of magnesium. I tried to search for the answer online, but I couldn't find any answers.

  1. This is interesting. I undergo frequent plasma exchanges and have required IV magnesium supplementation due to the effects of the exchange. Should I discuss this with my nephrologist?

    1. Hi , that is a great question! It couldn't hurt to have a discussion with your physician. Wishing you well. -Jessica, Team Member

  2. you bring up a good question. I found this information on https://www.myastheniagravis.org; “Magnesium can interfere with neuromuscular transmission. The usual doses of medications containing magnesium (antacids, laxatives) are unlikely to cause problems – except in patients with kidney disease. The amount of magnesium in daily multivitamins is unlikely to cause problems. However, intravenous doses of magnesium sulfate can cause serious muscle weakness and should be avoided in MG patients.” Based on this information, small amounts of magnesium, like that found in basil, may be tolerated without issue. Of course, it is always a good idea to check in with your doctor as they know your particular case and what would be best for you💚. I hope you have been doing well. All my best, Julie (team member)
