Covid-19 trigger or cause MG? Also, MG and swallowing problems

Hello:

I am a 71 year old male.

I had covid-19 the first week of January 2022.

Immediately, upon recovering from covid-19, I developed double vision.

By mid February of 22, I was diagnosed with ocular myasthenia gravis.

My vision was corrected with steroids. I am off the steroids now but take 1000mg of CellCept twice daily.

My neurologist insists the covid-19 did not cause/trigger the MG.

My life was pretty OK until October of 2023 when I started having problems swallowing.

My neurologist is adamant that it is not related to the MG.

Yesterday, I got a second opinion, the second neurologist also didn't think the swallowing was MG related, but prescribed pyridostigm
.
I am to take 1/2 pill, 1/2 hour before a meal.

I have only had 2 meals since then, but my swallowing seems much improved....too soon to tell for sure.

I am interested to know if anyone else thinks that their MG is the result of having had covid-19.

I am also interested to hear if anyone has swallowing problems similar to what I am experiencing.

Thanks

  1. Hi , I'm so sorry to hear that you've been experiencing this. I'm sure it's been frustrating trying to get a clear answer about what caused your MG. Hopefully some community members will chime in to share their experiences, but in the meantime, here's an article about COVID-19 & MG: https://myasthenia-gravis.com/clinical/covid. Not sure if this is relevant but also wanted to share a community forum thread about MG & the COVID vaccine: https://myasthenia-gravis.com/forums/myasthenia-gravis-post-covid-vaccination. Hoping that you're able to get a clear answer soon! Best, Allison (Team Member)
