Gabapentin and Myasthenia Gravis

Gabapentin (Gralise, Horizant, Neuraptine) is deemed cautionary with Myasthenia gravis, as it can potentially worsen symptoms. Gabapentin is used to treat seizure, nerve, and pain conditions.

It can be problematic to go without Gabapentin if it stabilizes a condition other than Myasthenia gravis; however, it is also risky.

Are you on Gabapentin and have Myasthenia gravis? Have you noticed worsened symptoms or experienced a crisis?

Were you taken off Gabapentin because of MG? How did your body respond? Was any drug or treatment added to replace Gabapentin?

  1. 4 months ago I was prescribed gabapentin for tactile allodynia. Since then, my symptoms have worsened. I am so glad I saw this post . I will stop the gabapentin as soon as possible.

    1. Gabapentin was prescribed a long time ago for fibromyalgia. I felt awful on it and it did nothing for me. Some time later I was prescribed Lyrica, a close relative to gabapentin. It’s pretty much stopped the fibro, but I’m sorry to say I still get foot/leg/hand cramps from too much use.
I’ve moved and waiting for this appointment in September. Currently on the basic 3: azothioprine, prednisone, and Mestinon. Hoping for better!

      1. We had removed his medication from my repertoire after my diagnosis but this past year we recently re-introduced it at a lower dosage for my restless leg syndrome. Is that even with other treatments has been keeping me up all night long. It’s definitely a challenge trying to find the balance because there is benefit from this medication but it can definitely increase symptomatic issues with myasthenia gravis at so many other things. It’s a delicate balance act and it’s often individually-based. This is definitely something that one must work closely with their medical team, to find the best answer for their individual case

        1. My husband takes Gabapentin for his back pain and has MG, lately he has been having a lot of sto.ach pain I told him to stop Gabapentin to see if that helps, for the past week he hasn't had any pain.

          1. How has your husband's back been without Gabapentin?
