I was diagnosed in Dec 2012 and started working my first job 4 months later (March 2013). I still didn't know much about MG and how it would affect me. Especially in the workplace. My manager at the time was completely aware of my sickness. When I had my first crisis and had to undergo IVIG treatments I asked to not be hospitalized due to the fear of losing my job. (I was a highly independent 17-year-old. I had my own bills I paid for without the help of my parents and now medical expenses. My parents raised to me this way and I'm very thankful.) I had to do a 5-day IVIG treatment and still work. So, my doctors agreed to let me keep the IV in my arm and covered it while I worked. My manager however was pressing me to show her the IV in my arm to know that that was the truth on why I missed work that day.
I remember another incident, same manager. I had a bad crisis and had to be hospitalized for a week and when I came back to work my manager pulled me to the side and said, "I'm not sure if I can keep you anymore. It's not fair to other to have to pick up the slack for you. It's not our fault you have an illness." I was in disbelief that she said that to me and also panic arouse in me because I was wondering how I would pay for my medical expenses and have a normal life in the workplace. Needless to say...she ended up getting fired. Turns out the supervisor running the shift overheard her telling me this and wrote HR/ corporate on my behalf. Stating that the manager was showing me discrimination for having a disability and being the only African American at that location. - Jazmin (Mg team member)
