Myasthenia Gravis and Cardiovascular Medication

Myasthenia gravis may pose a risk to patients using cardiovascular medications to treat heart conditions (coronary artery disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, and heart arrhythmias). Beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and statins should be used cautiously. Lidocaine (Xylocaine), Procainamide, and Quinidine are some drugs known to have caused adverse reactions with MG.

Do you have Myasthenia gravis and are on or have been on cardiovascular medications? Which ones and what dose? Did you notice any triggered symptoms?

How long has this persisted if you had no problem using cardiovascular medications?

  1. I started taking a statin last year and just following I began to have excessive nose bleeds. They were so bad, I thought I may need to be hospitalized. I just read about staying away from stations. I think I am going to stop taking it altogether.

    1. that sounds terrible, I’m sorry you had that experience! If you haven’t already, I would encourage you to reach out to your doctor with your concerns about the statins. Sending well wishes, Julie (team member)

  2. No

    1. I had to stop beta blockers after it caused severe weakness. and I have been told not to take statins. I was only on the beta blocker for a few days when I noticed the effects. When I stopped it went back to my regular self

      1. We greatly appreciate you making the effort the share your experience! It significantly benefits our community and others with MG 😀

    2. I take Metoprolol 50 mg ER daily for arrhythmia. I haven’t noticed any problems . I have been on beta blockers consistently for at least a decade and have had MG for at least 2 1/2 years.

      1. I’m glad to hear that you have not noticed any problems related to using Metoprolol! Do you feel your MG is being well managed? -Julie (team member)
