Side effects from medications that your doctor wont acknowledge

Have you ever started a new medication and began having symptoms that your doctor refuses to acknowledge?

How did you overcome this?

How did it make you feel?

  1. I've been on a new medication (azathioprine) for 5 weeks now and I have developed a numerous amount of side effects. Those side effects consist of: random bruises, slurred speech, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite, weight loss, the overall uneasiness of feeling sick, migraines and body aches mainly in my back. I got blood work done every week since starting the medication and notice that every week my glucose levels kept dropping.

I notified my doctor and asked for an IVIG treatment to get my symptoms (the slurred speech, double vision and difficulty breathing) under control, since oral medication alone was not improving my symptoms. He said no and insisted I go to the hospital if I'm not feeling well. This is my new neurologist since moving to a new state. This is also the first time I feel a doctor did not acknowledge me and my concerns for myself. He also upped my meds and told me to check in with him in a week.

On top of not feeling seen, heard or taken care of. I got a call from the nurse in the office stating my doctor will no longer be keeping me as a patient and is passing me off to someone else. I'm not sure if he isn't knowledgeable of the disease or found me difficult for voicing my concerns and what I want.

Nevertheless, I am here to say, don't be afraid to advocate for yourself, you know your body better than anyone. I do respect health care providers and trust their education in the medical field. But we as patients should never feel as if our medical needs are not being met. Happy road to recovery. - Jazmin (team member)
