Finding Strength: The Power of Myasthenia Gravis Advocacy

Hope is a powerful force. It carries us through the most challenging times, pushing us to seek new opportunities and advocate not only for ourselves but for those who may not yet have found their voice. In the myasthenia gravis (MG) community, advocacy isn’t just about speaking up—it’s about creating change, forging new paths, and proving that we are more than our diagnosis.

How one conversation led to change

I never imagined that answering a simple survey would lead to something much greater. The way I spoke about my experiences and the journey of those in our community caught the attention of the organizers, and I was invited to join a patient advisory panel for a pharmaceutical company.

What began as my personal journey turned into something transformative—not just for me, but for our entire community. Through this opportunity, I was able to co-develop an adaptive yoga program specifically designed for people living with MG, based on the very real challenges our community faces every day.

Finding purpose while living with MG

This experience reinforced an important truth: our voices matter. Our stories, struggles, and triumphs carry weight. When we share them, they can create opportunities we never expected.

For those navigating life with MG and other chronic illnesses, it can be easy to feel like control has been taken away. Many of us face new challenges and limitations. While some may experience mild difficulties, others face life-altering changes.

For me, the journey has been profoundly transformative. The muscular weakness caused by MG, compounded with my pre-existing conditions, changed my life in ways I never anticipated. But instead of surrendering to despair, I chose to adapt and find new ways to grow and contribute.

Turning challenges into opportunities

I leaned into public speaking lessons, worked on enhancing my vocal delivery skills, and found confidence in advocating for myself and others. These skills helped me become a member of the patient advisory panel and gave me the confidence to explore new ways to live fully within my capabilities. Through this growth, I discovered the benefits of adaptive yoga—adjusting movements for seated positions and limited arm mobility—and mindful creative arts as a way to stay engaged, present, and connected to my passions.

Finding your own path forward

Your journey will be different from mine, but the essence remains the same. Finding your inner light and identifying what brings you joy is crucial. It may not look like it once did, but with adaptation and perseverance, you can still embrace fulfillment in new ways.

Whether it’s exploring creative outlets, learning new skills, or becoming an advocate in your own way, the possibilities are endless. The key is to recognize your strengths, accept your evolving needs, and carve a path that suits your body and spirit.

Your voice matters

I encourage you to find that internal advocate within yourself. It doesn’t have to be grand or public—advocacy can be as simple as sharing your story with a friend, participating in a support group, or even filling out a survey.

You never know where one small action might lead.

The lasting impact of MG advocacy

You never know who is listening. You never know whose life you may change. Your words, your courage, and your resilience matter. And through advocacy, we can continue to build a future filled with hope—not just for ourselves, but for the entire MG community.

A call to action

So stand up, speak out, and believe in the power of your own voice. Because change starts with us. And hope, when nurtured, has the power to transform lives.
