Living with Myasthenia Gravis in Asheville: A Year of Setbacks and Strength

I’ve now been in Asheville for a year with my cat. We found a place that welcomed both of us, and the cat is loved by everyone in the Assisted Living community! I’m happy here too, despite the health challenges I’ve faced this year.

Unexpected struggles and strength

Physically, though, things haven’t been all smooth sailing. I had a spell in the hospital with cellulitis, but I got through it. Then, I went for an RSV shot, not realizing it was a live or attenuated vaccine. Unfortunately, it hit me hard. With my COPD and oxygen dependency, the RSV was really tough. The doctors suggested I go to the hospital again, but I refused. They did what they could, and after 10 days, the coughing finally stopped.

A surprising health scare

The latest health challenge was a sudden lump on my nose. My first thought was, “I’m too old (75) for acne!” But it didn’t look like acne. We watched it for a few weeks, but it started growing, so I saw a dermatologist. He diagnosed it as squamous cell carcinoma—skin cancer. Surgery has been done, and it’s healing, but it was deep and aggressive. The doctor is doing genetic testing to ensure it hasn’t spread to a nearby nerve.

This whole year has been scary, and it still is. And, yes, politics scare me too—let’s leave it at that! <😁>

New health questions

As for my energy levels, my thyroid is still shut down, and my TSH is high. I spend a lot of time in my recliner with my cat. The latest symptom is shaking—my hands and arms. Could this be related to my MG, or is something else starting to show up? If anyone knows, please let me know! I won’t be seeing the doctor for a few months.

This year has been full of health challenges and uncertainty, but it’s also been a journey of resilience and support. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has been there for me. Thank you all for your love and kindness—I’m sending mine right back to you!
