How does Myasthenia Gravis affect eye health, and why are regular eye exams important for people with this condition?

Myasthenia Gravis often affects the muscles that control eye movement and eyelids, leading to symptoms like drooping eyelids (ptosis) and double vision (diplopia). These eye-related symptoms can fluctuate throughout the day and sometimes worsen with fatigue.

Regular eye exams are essential for people with MG to monitor these changes, assess muscle function, and rule out other eye conditions. Eye care professionals can also help manage symptoms by recommending treatments, such as eye patches for double vision or therapies to improve muscle strength. Early detection and consistent monitoring through eye exams help maintain vision quality and improve overall quality of life for MG patients.

  1. For myself, I just wish my Neuro Eye Doctor would listen when I tell him I get pretty much constant eye twitching, I was told that I need eye drops, which I use at least 3-4 times a day. I was told me that this twitching is not MG related. It's not that I'm looking to have a problem, but I have read that both CellCept & Mestinon can cause eye twitching. I know really bright lighting effects this as well, since my diagnosis. Where I used to work, I sat under these florescent lights & after almost a year being frustrated with this I graciously bowed out & retired after almost 50 years of working in our local hospital. I wear sunglasses when out & about year-round & also the florescent lighting affects me as well.
The Neuro Eye Doctor, is the one who diagnosed me with MG, He is very good but I am frustrated with this issue
thank you & have a terrific day
