Unusual symptom?

I was finally diagnosed with a muscle disease/disorder, non-specific, about 5 years ago after going to the neurologist for over 10 years. I have the muscle weakness, pain, double vision, etc.; but I have also noticed an increase in apathy. I understand how you feel has a lot to do with what you do, but it seems like my desire to ANYTHING is completely gone and getting worse if you can imagine. I can sit in my recliner all day with no TV, no music, no reading--just napping on and off and checking my phone. I have also been eating just one meal a day and feeling perfectly satisfied. I'm 74 years old and have been taking Wellbutrin and Duloxetin for pain and depression for a number of years. Is anyone else experiencing this apathy symptom?

  1. You are welcome. Typical treatment includes Prednisone, Pyridostigmine and a series of IVIG which is Intravenous Immunoglobulin. IVIG is a five day treatment and takes about 2 to 3 hours per treatment. However, it didn't help much with the apathy and does wear off after some period of time. Best of luck.

    1. Bless you, this apathy bothers me greatly and I had never seen much discussion on it. I do have an appointment with a different neurologist at the end of July. I have not seen a neurologist since 2020 at which time she told me there was only treatment for my muscle pain and nothing for my weakness and balance issues. Although she had written several papers on MG, she had never seriously considered that as a diagnosis for me. So I'm now at the point muscle weakness is having an impact on my daily life. It is only after seeing so many commercials on TV for treatments that I decided to seek help again. Again, thanks so much for your reply, it has been an encouragement for me.

      1. It is possible that your meds are causing the apathy but if this is somewhat recent then the muscle weakness and double vision are usual symptoms of gMG. You can get a blood test and some others to determine it more clearly. Usually, it is best to see a Neurologist with experience with MG.
With my MG I have very distinct apathy and lost my desire to do most things that were hobbies except watch TV and streaming services. I am slowly pulling out of that but have a long way to go. I am older like you so maybe we are affected more by this.
