Hypertension Medication

Has anyone been diagnosed with hypertension. If so, what medication do you take, due to having Generalized Myasthenia Gravis. How is the medication. What side effects did you experience. I’m trying to see if there is a blood pressure medication that works better for Myasthenia Gravis.

  1. Many years on metoporal but fought with steroids fo MG. So now on "patch"
For pressure and remote daily readings to my cardio.via cell-reader.

    1. I recommend reaching out to or reading some articles by Janice, one of our contributors who also lives with hypertension: https://myasthenia-gravis.com/living/ongoing-issues.

      "Hypertension drugs
Propranolol and other beta-blockers are used for hypertension (high blood pressure), heart disease, anxiety, and migraine. But they also may make MG worse. Calcium channel blockers, such as verapamil, may cause increased weakness. Monitor use" https://myasthenia-gravis.com/clinical/drugs-vaccines-to-avoid.

The following studies discuss blood pressure medications and MG, I recommend giving them a look: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4342656/#:~:text=In%20the%20myasthenic%20patient%2C%20hydralazine,in%20preeclampsia%20and%20myasthenia%20gravis., https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34184370/, https://myasthenia.org/Portals/0/Cautionary%20Drugs.pdf, https://nebula.wsimg.com/903ebe2c701eb4e72e3211dc9fb9064e?AccessKeyId=7F50FBE19A111D19DDAC&disposition=0&alloworigin=1, https://myasthenia-gravis.com/complications-comorbidities.

      1. I was taking Toprol and Zestril when I was diagnosed with MG. My neurologist looked over my meds list and said to continue these for hypertension. I also take Lasix for water retention which can be associated with hypertension. Also no problem, no side effects.

        1. ARBs. such as cozaar are not on the do not use list. Around a long time and good antihypertensive
