MG Terminology

I bet we all remember the first few years after being diagnosed with Myasthenia gravis and constantly finding new MG-related terms we were unfamiliar with. Many of us are still in this boat. This disease is highly unique and individualized, and consequently, there are what seems like a billion subcategories and terminology.

This article on our site, https://myasthenia-gravis.com/glossary, highlights the following terms and their meanings:
Acetylcholine (ACh)
AChR antibody
Antibody
Autoimmune disease
cholinergic crisis
Diplopia
Dysphonia
Dysarthria
Dysphagia
Exacerbation
Generalized MG
LRP4 antibody
MuSK antibody
Myasthenic crisis
Myasthenia gravis
Neonatal MG
Neurologist
Neuromuscular junction
Ocular MG
Plasmapheresis
Ptosis
Refractory MG
Remission
Seronegative myasthenia gravis
Thymus
Thymectomy
Thymoma
Are any of these terms new to you? Are any still confusing you regarding what they mean?

Are any terms missing from this list that should be added for newly diagnosed individuals or those seeking to expand their MG knowledge?

  1. One thing I believe is so important in MG terminology is noting the difference in a flair/exacerbation and a crisis.

    1. Definitely! Here is an article on our site covering the differences, https://myasthenia-gravis.com/living/flare-exacerbation-crisis
