ivig infusion and back surgery

I start IVIG Infusion on Monday 14, 2025. Five straight days then followed by "maintenance days" of IVIG.
During the "maintenance days" , has anyone had back surgery ?
How does the surgery team/doctor handle MG, steroids intake for MG, IVIG Infusion while conducting surgery and anesthesia ?
Do I stop taking all medications & infusions ?
Is there anything special the doctor/surgeon should be aware of ?
Any advice or experience ?
Thanks,

  1. You must tell the doctors you have MG before any surgery. I had neck surgery early in the development of MG with a head drop, and had respiratory failure during the procedure because the surgeon and anesthesiologist had been incorrectly told that I had had a stroke. The anesthiologist handled it well when I stopped breathing or I wouldn't be writing this. There are a number of anesthia products that will work well with MG, but others will not. Some anesthetics, antibiotics (as mentioned in another comment), and muscle relaxants, can cause serious consequences. Also, medications used for cardiac tests that decrease the heart rate may be dangerous. Your neurologist can tell you if a medication prescribed by another doctor could be a problem, so it is helpful to review any medications used by a different specialist with your neurologist.

  2. Do you have a link to these antibiotics that cause problems?

    1. Here is a list of antibiotics to avoid. It was last updated in 2024 so always check with your doctor.

  3. Hello! Those are great questions!
This article shares some advice on what kinds of things you should bring up with your doctor prior to surgery. I hope it helps!

  4. There is a long list of anti-biotics that should not be used for people with MG. The only one I was given was by mid line IV for 14 days (not surgery). You should find out about any anti-biotic that they will give you and clear it with your neurologist.
